Atlanta, GA - The Talbott Recovery Campus (Talbott Recovery Campus) was honored recently by The National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP) with the James W. West, MD, Quality Improvement Award. Named in honor of James W. West, M.D Medical Director Emeritus of the Betty Ford Center in recognition of his pioneering efforts and ongoing support of quality improvement, the award encourages NAATP members to document their quality improvement activities.
Accepting the award Talbott CEO, Benjamin Underwood emphasized one of the organization's core principals: "successful quality improvement involves commitment at all levels." Mr. Underwood went on to credit his staff for the success of the project. "It takes people who are energetic and constantly want to improve and this organization is very high functioning when it comes to quality improvement."
Atlanta based Talbott Recovery Campus has a twenty thirty year track record of industry leadership as a provider of world-class treatment services for chemical dependency and dual diagnosis patients. Although these patients come from all walks of life, Talbott has been long been recognized as the treatment center of choice for impaired healthcare professionals with a national reputation as "the place where healers go to be healed."
Talbott Recovery Campus Director of Clinical Services, Nanci Stockwell who addressed NAATP members at their 2006 Annual Conference, defined the challenge. "You've got to be willing to look at yourself and see what you can do differently and, that can be hard." Talbott's twelve member Quality Council serves as the project's control center. Reducing program discharges against medical advice (AMA) and patient absences without leave (AWOL) became primary goals in 2004. While working on these issues, Talbott Recovery Campus team discovered a high correlation between patients who relapsed during treatment and those who left treatment AMA. Solving these inter-related issues became the focus of Talbott Recovery Campus 2005 Quality Improvement efforts.
Talbott utilizes a data driven approach to gather information from patients, family members and staff on a regular basis. This process, according to Stockwell, uncovered a few issues patients felt needed more attention. "Sexual issues specific to men were not being discussed. There was also no group specific to women's issues. Some wanted more information on parenting in recovery. These issues needed a forum." Stockwell emphasized that adopting a team approach with strong support from supervisors helps to encourage staff members and makes the program less threatening to staff members. "We tell clinicians that they don't have to be perfect. We all learn as we go along."
CEO Underwood says fine tuning programs based on patient feedback and sobriety success rates has always been a central element in Talbott Recovery Campus commitment to providing its patients the best care available in the world. . "At Talbott we view quality improvement in the same way we ask our patients to view their recoveries. We work for progress, we don't expect perfection. We do take it one day at a time."

The economy is affecting everyone and we know the denial which helps define the disease of addiction will capitalize on people who are already vulnerable. We feel a professional obligation to make our programs more accessible. Therefore we have developed a new program on the Northside of Atlanta to serve those who have financial and time constraints but want to start in a “Talbott Recovery Program”.
Additionally, we have received many requests from Alumni and Friends of Talbott to help during this unprecedented economic times to develop a Northside Atlanta entry level model specifically designed for people who are early in their addiction and have a strong support system at home. The new TALBOTT at Dunwoody program is designed to compliment our traditional 90-day program so one can easily integrate into our 90-day program if clinically indicated. Most Healthcare Professionals, Attorneys and Executives will need our extended 90 day program, but this will always be driven on the individual’s progress and circumstances.
The majority of patients coming directly into Talbott Recovery Campus’s 90 day program have attempted some type of treatment but need more in depth programming and time. We are now prepared to offer this comprehensive range of services which will reach out to more people who otherwise would not have the opportunity to experience the “Talbott Program”!
The new TALBOTT at Dunwoody opens March 16, 2009 and incorporates a 12- Step based, Partial Hospitalization Program which addresses both substance abuse and dual diagnoses. Patients will attend treatment Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Additionally, our patients are required to attend 12 Step support groups daily.
Treatment Program will include:
• Assessment to include psychological testing
• Daily spiritual group
• Daily process group
• Patient education
• Steps 1, 2, and 3 group
• DBT Skills Group
• Weekly individual sessions with Case Manager
• Weekly Multi-family group (this is an evening group)
• Weekly session with attending Physician
• 2-3 Family therapy sessions over the course of treatment
• Comprehensive continuing care planning

Talbott Recovery Campus co-founder and Medical Director Emeritus, Dr. G. Douglas Talbott was honored in December with induction into the Conway Hunter, M.D. Society. The society, named for Dr. Conway Hunter, an Atlanta physician, addiction treatment pioneer and one of Dr. Talbott's colleagues for almost thirty years, is a fraternity of individuals who share Dr. Hunter's vision and who have made substantial contributions to addiction treatment.
The induction ceremonies are a yearly highlight at the opening luncheon of SECAD (South East Conference on Addictive Diseases). Held in Atlanta, SECAD has become one of the largest conferences where information and experiences are exchanged on the treatment of alcoholism and other addictive diseases. Other inductees this year included: Stanley Gitlow, MD and Pat Fields.
Congratulations to Dr. Talbott. His induction is a well deserved honor.
Atlanta, Ga. - Benjamin H. Underwood, Sr., managing director of Talbott Recovery Campus in Clayton County was awarded the Georgia Hospital Association's (GHA) Chairman's Award, the association's highest honor, for his dedication and professional achievements.
Mr. Underwood, a respected leader in the field of addiction, behavioral and psychiatric treatment, has a career in heath care that spans four decades. He began his career in the mid-1960s as associate administrator of Atlanta's Northside Manor Hospital. He served as CEO of Metropolitan Psychiatric Center in Atlanta and Ridgeview Institute in Smyrna prior to joining Talbott Recovery Campus in 1986.
At Talbott Recovery Campus, Underwood initiated an innovative program to provide support for former patients as they transition back to their homes and into the community. Patients currently in treatment are assigned to an alumni group and are required to visit this group prior to discharge. Today, 13 of these groups have been established around the country, and patients continue to express gratitude for the support they receive from other Talbott alumni.
Underwood's dedication and expertise has earned him national acclaim. He served as chairman of the National Association of Addiction Treatment providers and was awarded the organization's Outstanding Achievement Award. Earlier this year, he accepted, on behalf of Talbott Recovery Campus, the prestigious James West Award for clinical excellence at the National Association of Addition Treatment Providers meeting. Underwood also served as chairman of the Georgia Association of Private Psychiatric Hospitals, is a Diplomate of the American College of Healthcare Executives and served on GHA's Board of Trustees for 12 years.
Additionally, he is involved in several civic organizations including BeSomeone, a program that teaches life skills to underprivileged children through the game of chess.
"Driven by the desire to help people live better lives, Benjamin Underwood is a compassionate and dedicated leader who continues to offer hope and inspiration in the field of addiction, behavioral and psychiatric treatment," said GHA President Joseph Parker. "He is an ideal recipient for this prestigious award."
