Sexual Addiction: Treating Couples and Partners - Steve Harris, LCSW & Elizabeth Edge, LCSW

This workshop will address the dynamics of emotionally codependent relationships in which at least one partner is an addict. Conceptual models and treatment modalities for working with couples will be explored.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to identify four stages of recovery for couples and at least three healing tasks associated with each stage.
2. Participants will gain understanding of the experiences and challenges facing partners of sexual addicts, and learn resources available to address them.
3. Participants will be able to identify and utilize effective interventions tailored to the particular needs of the couple and the partner of the sexual addict.

Women’s Addictive Behaviors: Sex, Love and Other Things - Elizabeth Edge, LCSW & Alan Yorker, LMFT

This workshop will focus on identifying the particular forms of addiction common to women with a highlighting of newly observed cross addictions of sexual preoccupation and behavior along with treatment tools and recommendations.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participant will learn biological differences in the female brain that direct love and sex.
2. Participant will learn about the making of a female sex addict including cultural and familial factors.
3. Participant will learn the four components of sex addiction in women.
4. Participant will learn how to implement treatment recommendations.
5. Participant will understand the relationship between “love addicted” and “love avoidant”.

About Our Presenters

Elizabeth L. Edge, LCSW , is a psycho-dynamically trained psychotherapist, working with individuals, couples, and families. She earned her Masters in Social Work from Smith College in 2003. She has over six years experience in the addiction field, co-founding the Sex Addiction treatment track at Talbott Recovery Campus. In April 2010, she will complete the fourth of four modules and earning her CSTAT (Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist), training under Patrick Carnes, the pioneer in the field of sex addiction and compulsivity.

Steve Harris, LCSW, CSAT-S is a licensed clinical social worker, and has been in private practice as a psychotherapist since 1987. He has worked extensively with a wide range of psychological and emotional difficulties, addiction and recovery, couples, families and groups, men’s issues, and survivors of childhood trauma. Steve has written, lectured, led workshops, and provided training, supervision and consultation. His interests include helping people address compulsion and freedom in the areas of sex, work, relationships and spirituality. In addition to providing psychotherapy aimed at problem resolution and change, Steve assists individuals seeking greater health, creativity, and thriving. Having worked in a variety of treatment settings, Steve has been with Metropolitan Psychotherapy Associates since 1992, and helped found The Metropolitan Counseling Services low cost clinic in 1995, where he has been a clinical supervisor for over ten years. He is also a therapist and consultant with the Dual Addiction Program at Talbott Recovery Campus. Steve is a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist and a CSAT Approved Supervisor for therapists training in sexual addiction treatment. From 2001 to 2004, Steve was the Atlanta Representative for the Musicians’ Assistance Program, helping chemically addicted musicians get treatment and recovery to resume productive careers in music.

Alan Yorker, MA, LMFT is currently the Coordinator for the Dual Addiction Program at the Talbott Recovery Campus in Atlanta, one of the nation’s leading treatment centers for addicted health and mental health professionals. His training after receiving his graduate psychology degree at Georgia State University includes a Clinical Fellowship at the University of California San Francisco, where he initiated study to become a sex therapist. He went on to further post graduate study at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction at Indiana University, where he completed an advanced certification program. He was a founder of the Georgia Chapter of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists in 1987. He has served as Chair of the Georgia Composite Licensing Board, as well as serving the Georgia Association for Marriage and Family Therapists as its Legislative Affairs Chair for five years. He has lectured on human sexuality at Emory University for fifteen years in the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health. He has been a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist since 1976.

 

Continuing Education Credit

Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Marriage & Family Therapists: Application has been made to NASW-GA, GAMFT, and LPCA of Georgia for 3 core professional education hours for each seminar in accordance with the guidelines established by the Georgia Composite Board.

Certified Addiction Counselors: Application has been made to Georgia Addiction Counselors Association for 3 clock continuing education hours for each seminar.

Certified Case Managers: Application has been made to the Case Management Society of America for 3 clock continuing education hours for each seminar.

Others: Though not approved by other agencies, physicians, psychologists, nurse practitioners, and others may be able to apply these seminars under other areas of your licensing board requirements. Please check with your specific board’s guidelines.

Participants must attend the entire presentation in order to receive a CE certificate at the conclusion of the seminar. According to State licensing guidelines, no partial credits will be issued.
