Personality Issues in the Search for Durable Recovery from Alcohol and Drug Addiction - David Prewett, Psy.D.
The presentation examines the contribution of research into personality characteristics, styles and disorders that are associated with addiction in adults and the influence, both positive and negative, various personality features exert on the recovery process. The seminar will illuminate the intersection between traditional therapeutic interventions and twelve step-based recovery that forms a "hybrid" model of help for those with the disease of addiction. Several particular personality types are discussed with particular attention to assets and threats associated with each style regarding the goal of durable, well-grounded recovery for the individual client. The presented information draws from works of Theodore Millon, Robert Craig, Aaron Beck and others who have researched and published extensively inthe area of personality and abuse and other maladaptive behaviors. The presenter brings to the workshop the experiences garnered from twenty-three years of hands-on, clinical practice focused on helping those with addiction find their way into recovery. The workshp goes beyond description of the identifying criteria for various personality disorders by specifically depicting the particular aspects of the personality that initially leave an individual vlunerable to substance abuse and those that threaten recovery once someone has decided to take steps to change. Specific treatment goals and threats to treatment compliance are discussed in a format designed to help care providers culpt meeaningful interventions applicable to real-world issues they face with clients on a daily basis. By understanding more fully the role personality issues play in recovery, the care provider is able to more expertly and confidently guide the client into a positon of durable and satisfying change.
